#BreakingTheIce Matt Stillwell

North Carolina native Matt Stillwell grew up as an athlete, not a musician. However, he decided to chose music over baseball and well…that paid off. Matt Stillwell released his debut single “Shine” in the fall of 2008. It debuted at No. 25 on iTunes Country Chart and the video reached No. 5 on CMT Pure. He continues to grow his fan base and his talent.

Where are you answering these questions from and what are you wearing?

In my bedroom.

What’s your official title and favorite thing about what you do?

President of Matt Stillwell Music Inc, Husband to Lindsey and daddy to Carolina and Ruby. I am blessed to play music for a living. Writing, recording, playing live, and running my label are all things I love but I would say playing live is my favorite.

My girls, breakfast and dreaming.

What’s the first concert you’ve ever attended?

Travis Tritt

If you were stranded on a island and you could only have one album with you to listen to, whose album would you pick and why?

As much as I’d like to say Haggard or Strait or Ryan Adams, I think I’ll choose Eric Church’s Carolina. I believe what he says and it reminds me of home.

What’s the hardest life lesson you’ve learned?

That I can’t do everything.

Beer or whiskey?

Beer. Budweiser.

Who is your favorite country singer from the 90s?

Out of all the songs you’ve written, do you have a favorite?

“Hey Dad.” It came from such a bad spot, but it has helped me deal with the loss and has helped and is helping tons of people that have experienced loosing someone close to them.

Do you have a favorite place to perform?

Not really. If you twist my arm I’ll say East TN and Western NC.

What’s one gift you will never forget?

My kids!

What current event has your eyes and ears? What are you doing about it?

I’m the ambassador for Badges For Baseball which is a program of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. They bring cops and at risk kids together through baseball at a young age. I’m bringing my baseball background (college) and music to the table to help facilitate and grow the program nationally. We will be in 50 markets next year (All 30 Major League stadiums and 20 Minor League stadiums) implementing the program.

How do you think songwriters play a vital role in music today?

Without new great songs, the industry will just die. Whether that’s helping an artist say what they need to say, or they are the artist. Creation is the most important part of the industry. Without it, it dies.

Vince Gill
